My last cat did some grinding of her teeth when she was both nauseated and in pain from a bout of pancreatitis. I think the first thing to consider, though, might be some gum, tooth or mouth issues. If it were me, I'd check with a veterinary dentist first and rule out mouth issues, then try your regular vet.
